First Bite Blog: Sweet Wishes

My cupcake quest has now expanded beyond Atlanta to my hometown of Baton Rouge. I won some free cupcakes fromSweet Wishes Cafe via Twitter following the Saints Superbowl win. I guess everyone was in a giving mood! (But really, they have been doing Twitter giveaways fairly often…follow them!) As far as I know, this is Baton Rouge’s only cupcakery. And though they’ve been open for a few years, all I can say is…About Time! I stopped in when I breezed through BR on my way to NOLA for Mardi Gras to pick up my loot:

Sweet Wishes

Cupcakes

If memory serves, these are (cw from top) white chocolate raspberry, chocolate peanut butter, red velvet, and king cake. These didn’t look like the cupcakes I’m used to eating. They looked more…rustic. I will admit, to me “rustic” at first said “dry” but this was not the case at all. I was also a little wary because Sweet Wishes uses a more moderate frosting-to-cake ratio than I like (I’m a big frosting person) but I was pleasantly surprised on more than just those two points.

The cake was really, really moist, and the rustic look just added a “We just made these with our Mom” kind of nostalgia. The amount of frosting perfectly complemented the size of the cupcake, and it wasn’t too sweet, as it had a little something extra to compete with–there was stuff baked into the cake!! When I bit into the white chocolate raspberry, I found that there were actual bits of white chocolate in the cake., The chocolate peanut butter also had peanut butter chips baked in. In all my cupcake tastings, I’ve never seen anyone else do this, and I really liked it. Kudos, Sweet Wishes. I’ve just added a permanent stop to my trips home.

Sweet Wishes Cafe is located on Perkins Rd near the intersection with Bluebonnet. They have free wifi, coffee, tea, various gift items for purchase, and also serve LSU Dairy ice cream. Check them out!

Social Media Attention: I’m only in it for the cupcakes

There are two questions I get asked with annoying frequency:

1. Do you have anything to drink besides Dr Pepper?

and

2. Why are you on Twitter?

As you can imagine, the first question is usually asked by people who either a) don’t know me at all or b) or are having some kind of psychotic break with reality and are experiencing some kind of world where I would have something to drink other than Dr Pepper. (For those still trying to keep up, the short answer? No, I don’t have anything other than Dr Pepper)

The second, unfortunately, is usually asked by people by own age who could actually benefit by expanding their social media horizons – aka not just being on Facebook. It’s funny too, because you would think I wouldn’t have to twist peoples’ arms in the PR INDUSTRY to explore other facets of the media – crazy, I know.

This post will be short, sweet, and to the point – much like the inspiration for this post.

The short version of my “Why You Should Be On Twitter” speech goes a little something like this:

“Twitter is better than Facebook because (NOTE: always start a speech like this; because now people are actually listening) there aren’t nearly the technical difficulties when you’re only dealing with 140 character updates. Also, Twitter actually cares about its users because tweets were made for the mobile age – 140 characters is the maximum for most phone companies for characters in a single text message – therefore saving your minutes and texts per month.

If you’re on Facebook to stalk (and let’s face it, you probably are), Twitter will open a whole new world to you. No longer are your favorite celebrities limited to fan pages and “likes.” No, you can “follow” them and read their tweets as they tweet them! Never again will you wonder what your favorite celeb is eating for lunch – oh no. You’ll know, and what’s better? They will probably be a twitpic (again, for those too slow to keep pace: Twitpic = Twitter + picture) too! Ever wonder what’s running through your celebs mind when he/she’s out partying or when he/she is about to go to bed (Kristin Chenoweth is particularly funny – especially when she takes Ambien)? Now. you’ll. know. Simple, yes?

Now for my less superficial, more philanthropic reasons: thankfully, non-profits are some of the most adept at adapting to new technologies. For example, To Write Love On Her Arms (@TWLOHA) is very active on Twitter. I follow the org, Jamie – their founder -, and the people they work with. It keeps me up to date on what’s going on, what they have coming up, etc.

Last, but certainly not least – actually, this is probably the most important reason – I’m only in it for the cupcakes.

Yep, you read that right – cupcakes. Thanks to Katelyn Doumit (@Katedou), I was introduced to Sweet Wishes Cupcakes (@SweetWishesCupcakes) on Twitter. It’s kind of sad, but there is nothing I love more than (no, not cupcakes) seeing local businesses using social networking. And other Baton Rouge businesses need to take note and pay attention, because SWC is raising the bar – they just offered me cupcakes for free when I come by to visit.

Now if that’s not good PR, I don’t know what is.

Like I said, pay attention.

(And yes, that was the short version of my speech. The longer version – “Why You Should Be On Twitter and Why I’m Better Than You Because I’m On it” is available upon request)…only slightly kidding with that one

Oh, what am I thinking? You’re probably still too busy trying to figure out why you only have so many fans on your business’ fan page or why Facebook chat keeps signing off on you to read this blog. Meanwhile, Sweet Wishes Cafe has a guaranteed new customer and a lifelong Twitter follower.

Your loss.

Do you absolutely love cupcakes? Do you find yourself longing for that perfect cupcake you had long ago at grandma's? Well if you want cupcake heaven it's here in Baton Rouge at Sweet Wishes cafe. A gourmet shop which offers about 35+ different handcrafted cupcakes. It's a great place to go sit, relax and enjoy a perfect cup of coffee and a cupcake like you'll have no place else. They also have free wifi so you can act like you're working while you'e indulging. It's locally owned and operated by two ladies who'll make sure you're at home when you visit Sweet Wishes.

I visited Sweet Wishes to get some cupcakes for my wife and of course try them out. I had a red velvet cupcake that was so moist and tasty. Truly I was shocked at how good it was. For my wife I got an arrangement of four including red velvet, White Chocolate Raspberry, Italian Cream and Carrot. They were very beautiful and tasty treats. Talking with the lady at the counter she explained that with a couple of days notice you can have specially made cupcakes just for your loved one. Most of the cupcakes have a custom made chocolate top piece and they can make those specially for your occasion. Very neat.

I also found out that Sweet Wishes has breakfast cupcakes that you can call in and order. How about that? Breakfast cupcake.
